
Following the Chinese style lunar calendar, this year,2008 , is the year of Rat which is also known by its former name of Wu Zi. This zodiac means that this year is the year of affluence. With bad economic situation in this year, many Thais of Chinese origin remain going to the market to buy things for “offering day” or “Wan Wai”. From checking prices in some shops at Yao Wa Raj area, the checker found that price of fowls increase from last year about 80-90 bath. Sellers said that price of many things is higher very much. It makes their profit lower. In addition, some said they have to decrease the number goods almost half because the number of customer is lower than former year. In the side of customers, they said that the price of things is higher, so they try to not buying thing overmuch. Some adults also said they need to give “Ang Pao”(red envelop with money) to their children less since reason of economic situation. Beside, the annual celebration at Yao Wa Raj road is cancel because this is still in the period of mourning for passing away of HRH Princess Galyani. However, for this special day, the royal officer announce that people can wear *red cloths according to Chinese custom. So, activities in the period of Chinese New Year’s Day will be running normally, but there is no great celebration only.
